Professor Casti retires as Editor-in-Chief of Applied Mathematics and Computation
The first issue of Applied Mathematics and Computation appeared in July 1975 under the Founding Editorship of Robert Kalaba.
As of volume 10 (1982), John Casti moved from the Board of Associate Editors to join Robert Kalaba as Co-Editor.
From vol. 15 (1984), on the retirement of Robert Kalaba, the editorship changed to John Casti and Melvin Scott, the latter also a prior Member of the Board of Associate editors, which team has been in place since then, supported by the Board of Associate Editors.
After more than 25 years at the helm, John Casti has at this point decided to relinquish his position in order that others may take over the responsibility, and that the journal may enjoy an influx of new blood at the lead editorial level, a phase every journal must periodically pass through.
In its first year, the journal published just 23 papers, but since then has grown enormously, especially since the advent of the electronic era and the web submission route, so that in 2007 more than 4,000 submissions were received, very many of these coming from newly emerging geographical areas of mathematical activity.
Throughout this long period, John Casti has provided a pivot of stability which has allowed the journal to continue to process the increasing workload in such a way that the readership has been able to enjoy the constant presence of this journal with its high profile within the interdisciplinary fields of computational mathematics.
For this extensive effort over such a long period, Elsevier wishes to thank Professor Casti most sincerely, and to wish him every success in all his future endeavours.
