Established
in 1920 as a utilitarian organization, the
French Association of University Women (Affdu)
has as its primary objective the promotion of
the access of women to higher education as well
as to senior positions and furthering professional
and friendly relations of exchanges at national
and international levels.
At
the national level, the Affdu attributes
financial aid to allow women to pursue their studies
at doctoral and post-doctoral level.
Bulletin des Sciences Mathématiques is pleased to announce the 2008 winner of the AFFDU award.
Maria CARRIZOSA
Mathematics
Maria Carrizosa is 29 years old, she is Colombian.
She first studied at Universidad de los Andes in Bogota. She passed a « DEA Méthodes Algébriques » at the University of Paris 6 (July 2004) and was then supported as “allocataire de recherché”, and later on, as “ATER” at University Paris 6.
She will finish her thesis before this summer. Her current study area is Arithmetic Geometry on “Relative abelian Lehmer’s problem”, a challenging subject, under the supervision of Sinnou David in the team “Théorie des Nombres” of the Mathematics Institute of Jussieu (UMR 7586).
The aim is to generalize partial results already obtained around the classical Lehmer problem – prove a certain inequality for Weil’s logarithmic height of non-zero elements a, algebraic over Q and not a root of 1 - which remains an unsolved problem.
We have received supporting letters from Marc Hindry and Sinnou David. Her financial support will cease in September 2008 and Maria Carrizosa is asking 1300 euros to allow her to continue her research at the University of Paris 6, and search for a teaching or post-doctoral position.
Maria Carrizosa is clearly a very capable researcher working in pure and difficult mathematics and the Elsevier /Affdu support might be crucial for her career.
